Hiccups Along The Way - Goal still achieved.

You know when you have all your plans set and something goes awry? Nothing you can do but deal with it right? Well that happened to us. On August 20, we were out sailing on Lake Michigan with some friends and after having a few to drink, I went to cut an avocado.  Yes, I brought the wrong knife. Yes, I pitted the avocado wrong. And yes,  I stabbed myself. I had surgery an am on a somewhat protracted path to recovery.

Why is this relevant? No because with a hole in my hand I have another thing in common with Jesus Christ, but because it was horrible timing. Trying to move. Having to get the house ready to sell. Flying with a cat and all your summer clothes, scuba gear, and golf clubs translating to 4 large suitcases plus 2 carry ons and a cat travel bag. Having one hand was not convenient.

But we made it! Here we are.  All moved in to our furnished condo.

It's 82 degrees. Our location is great.  It turns out we can easily walk from our place to the oceanfront.

And that evening we watched the sunset from the beach. We went to Honokohau Harbor beach which was beautiful and fairly easy to get to. No, we don't know those people in the background, so don't ask for their number.

Not a bad start!

In Search Of Restaurants

We found a great breakfast place walking distance. Kalikala Cuisine. The lilikoi french toast was to die for and the view was unbeatable.

... and a gecko joined us for our meal telling us that in fifteen minutes we could save 15% or more on car insurance.

We then spent the afternoon checking out sports bars for the bachelor party in January. We headed up north to the Waikaloa area since the bachelorette party will be up there.  It is a bit dystopian, so we had our doubts. We checked out:

A-Bay Island Grill - Nice.  A few TVs. A lot of kids. Probably not the right place.

Tropics Ale House - A lot of TVs and they open at 7 am on football Sunday and serve breakfast. Appropriately loud. Potential.

Johnny's Restaurant - On the golf course, which could be valuable. Also open early. Not many TVs.

Leaning towards Tropics Ale House for now.

The Real Gist

What has been hard so far?

  • Finding a gym that will accommodate 6 months - gym prices are a bit high here. This may take a few days to figure out.
  • Waiting for more boxes to arrive of our stuff - we had to ship a bunch of stuff to keep our checked luggage to 2 pieces per person and our scuba gear plus our golf clubs took up 2 of them. So last minute we left some boxes behind that are still awaiting shipment.
  • Our rental car has no AC - we will solve that, but in the interim, it is a bit warm unless we are driving at speed.
  • Moving our stuff into a place where there already is stuff - This is a furnished place and someone actually lived here.  There are medicines and toiletries in the bathroom, food in the kitchen cabinets and the fridge. Some has been a nice surprise - like the hawaiian spirulina which I put in my smoothies.  Some have been less apparently valuable like the potions for health that I have no idea what they do.
  • Learning to live without - generally, we have less stuff than normal and we have to figure it out. We will. And it's probably a good experience for us.
  • Being away from family. It hasn't hit home yet, but it will as we miss opportunities to see them.
