Our First Week - Hiking, Snorkeling, and Shopping

As we try to get the lay of the land, we also want to enjoy the surroundings.  Shopping Even though we are in a furnished apartment, we can't seem to escape visiting Walmart every day to buy something, whether it be food, supplies or the lightbulb we thought we needed, but instead just needed to flip a switch. Oh the challenges of moving into an apartment that is already furnished, has lots of stuff, and you have no idea what is where. But that isn't the fun part.  We are planning on hiking, snorkeling, golfing, pickle balling, kayaking, and scuba diving every day.  OK, not everything every day, but one thing each day.  OK, golfing, and kayaking may be out for me until my hand fully heals, but you get my drift. Hiking So far, we have done two hikes: 1. Puialoa Point, an easier 2 mile round trip trail as we get accustomed to the terrain and I get comfortable hiking with a lame hand. We ended at a nice lava rich coast line at the water. Along the way we saw a num...

You know when you have all your plans set and something goes awry? Nothing you can do but deal with it right? Well that happened to us. On August 20, we were out sailing on Lake Michigan with some friends and after having a few to drink, I went to cut an avocado.  Yes, I brought the wrong knife. Yes, I pitted the avocado wrong. And yes,  I stabbed myself. I had surgery an am on a somewhat protracted path to recovery. Why is this relevant? No because with a hole in my hand I have another thing in common with Jesus Christ, but because it was horrible timing. Trying to move. Having to get the house ready to sell. Flying with a cat and all your summer clothes, scuba gear, and golf clubs translating to 4 large suitcases plus 2 carry ons and a cat travel bag. Having one hand was not convenient.  But we made it! Here we are.  All moved in to our furnished condo. It's 82 degrees. Our location is great.  It turns out we can easily walk from our place to the oceanfront....

It's starting. Our semi-nomadic lifestyle. Our plan is to live in different places around the world for 6 months to a year. On the official list so far is: Big Island of Hawaii Kauai Bonaire Italy I won't bore you with the unofficial list as it is long and just may make you jealous. The plan is to experience these places, not just visit them. Experience them as a resident and truly get to know the culture and the people. It was Bob's idea and I immediately thought it was brilliant.  Our planned travel lifestyle will last until one or more of these events happen: We are sick of the travel We find a place we just can't leave Our kids want or need us in a single place One or both of us cease to exist OK, that went dark fast, but I think you get the gist. We don't have an end date, but we do have a start date. September 27, 2024. That is the day I (or we) fly from the Chicago area to the big island of Hawaii. Who We Are Our names are Bob and Toby. We have been dating fo...
